Being a "Good Wife"

Sometimes learning to be a biblical, godly wife can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Yes, there are some concepts that are major and can seem impossible, however not all of them are. Today I want us to look at some very simple ways we can be a godly wife to our husbands.

"For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening." 1 Peter 3:5,6

Please don't stop reading because you read the word submission, that is not what this post is about (however that is a very big concept in being a godly wife).

The part of the verse that I want to focus on today is "do good".

The Noah Webster 1828 Dictionary defines good in several ways, here are a few: conducive to happiness, suited to strengthen the healthful functions, complete, useful, cheerful, and kind.

If we look at the last part of this verse using the descriptions of good as stated above, it may take on a new meaning for us. Perhaps we are to be conducive to our husband's happiness or strengthen his functions. Maybe we are to be useful and cheerful to our husbands.

I want to suggest some very practical ways we can "do good" for our husbands.

1. Does he have a favorite beverage? My husband loves lemonade. Wouldn't it be conducive to his happiness if I were to keep lemonade in the fridge ready for him.

2. Does he have a favorite meal? When was the last time you fixed it? I know I can get caught up in fixing healthy meals for my family and neglect some of my husband's favorite dishes because they aren't the healthiest options.

3. Does he like to look nice for work? Do you take care of his clothes, keeping them pressed and ready for him? I struggle with this one because I do not like ironing at all but I do try to make sure he has a shirt ironed and ready to where.

4. This one is pretty basic but I have to mention it, do you keep his socks and underclothes cleaned and in his drawers easy for him to find? I have been known to have to dig socks out of the laundry basket so my hubby can get ready for work. That doesn't really make things go smoothly in the mornings.

5. Is your bed made and ready for him to get into at bedtime or does he have to move laundry out of the way first or make sure the covers are back on his side after you stole them all last night? Yeah, let's not get into how I know about this one.

6. Do you smile at him?

7. Do you greet him with a kiss when he comes home? Or give him one when he leaves?

8. Do you hold his hand when you are near him, walking or sitting?

9. Do you allow him time to decompress from work when he comes home? Or do you bombard him with your troubles from the day?

10. Do you purposely make your home a haven for him to come home to or is it filled with quarreling, nagging and grumpiness?

There are so many more but I'll let you ponder these for awhile. Let's make sure we are taking little practical steps to do good to our husbands, to be a godly wife in this way.

Do you have practical ways you bless your husband? I would love for you to leave a comment and share with us.

Blessings,
Rashel

    1. Thank you again, such a sweet compliment. It really isn't that hard, we just need to be aware of his likes and dislikes and do our best to take care of them.

  2. Love your tips! I, too, try to have my husband's clothes ironed for work, as well as packing him a lunch every day. I'm also working on timing my conversations with him - especially if it's an important discussion - to fit a time when he's relaxed and able to engage, rather than throwing it at him when he walks in the door from work.

  3. Every little thing we can do for our husbands is an act of love, of service for the gift that the Lord gave us. Some look down on this thought, but I know what is pleasing to the Lord....even on days when it is HARD!!
    Thanks!!
